A FEW WORDS FROM OUR PRESIDENT
“How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity.” This
year I am pleased to report that the state of the Zeta chapter of Phi Gamma
Delta is strong. With the entire undergraduate chapter living in the house our
brotherhood is at an unprecedented level. Also, our philanthropic endeavors,
intramurals, scholarship, and campus involvement are excelling.
This past fall we rose over $54,000 as a chapter for the Indiana University
Dance Marathon which benefits Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis. We also
have seven of the nineteen executive members, including the president, working
hard on the upcoming 2005 marathon taking place this fall. I would like to
unofficially state that Zeta has adopted the marathon as our campus philanthropy
because we have over 70% of the chapter participate in the organization.
Finally, next week we are hosting an event where the proceeds will go to next
year’s marathon.
We are currently leading the intramural point race with our recent basketball
championship. It was nothing short of an amazing come from behind victory, but,
additionally, every member of our chapter was at Assembly hall watching the
game. Having the purple haze in the stands was definitely a sight to see. By
putting these past few controversial years behind us we are looking to bring the
intramural championship back to Beechwood. Also, now, it being April, our Fiji
cycling team is on everyone’s mind. We qualified in 5th place last weekend; some
brothers are still riding in “miss-n-out,” and two weeks from today is race day
where they will ride with pride and try to bring back the trophy, which we
haven’t done since 1995, and boys, I think we are due.
The university has been transitioning database software over this past year
which, to the displeasure of me and the chapter, has delayed our grade reports
and consequently our scholarship checks, but we are anticipating a successful
report for this past fall in a few weeks. With all of the distractions in
college life, be it philanthropies, extra curricular activities, or social
functions, we continue to uphold scholarship as one of the main values of the
fraternity. A weak chapter GPA would cloud all of our other strengths. Every
time I hear someone speak of the fraternity it is prefaced by, “those guys get
really good grades, and they do this, or and they do that.” In my opinion,
performing well academically is the best way to display the quality and strength
of our chapter.
Zeta Fiji’s are everywhere on campus. We are Assistant Instructors for classes,
IUSA congress members, Dance Marathon executives and chairmen, and exemplary
members of the university’s Greek community. I have a challenging job, but when
I step back and take a perspective view of my life, I could not be more honored
to be the elected leader of such a fine group of gentlemen. This past year has
brought many accolades to Beechwood. We were honorable mention Cheney Cup,
awarded IFC chapter of the year, and we received the Beta Cup which recognizes
the top Fiji Chapter in Indiana. However, with these awards comes great
responsibility. It has been said that getting to the top is easy, but the real
task is staying there. Some may say we can only go one direction, which is down,
but I disagree. I think we can go down, which is something we all must realize,
but we can also go up, above, and beyond where we are now. Brothers, graduates
and undergraduates, I ask all of you to look around, recognize where we are
right now, and challenge yourself to think where we could be next year and how
are you going to be a part of it?
Thank you.
