Welcome Race Fans

Spring has sprung and the bikes are rolling. Team Fiji heads to Gainesville Florida next week for a long week of hard training. We have 6 riders all putting in lots of tough training hours. Rookie week opened at the track and John Rapp, John Vinicky and Bill Riggs all got to find out what it was like to ride a single geared bike on a cinder track. The Vets, Joe Keck, Jon Bannister and Rob Westfall then joined them this week. Things are shaping up nicely for Qualifications which are March 25th.

The Spring Collegiate Series started last weekend. This is where the boys ride for IU against other Midwest colleges, both big and small. It is quite a site to see IU verses Purdue played out on the asphalt. But all the Big Ten schools, and other Midwest schools like Marion, DePauw, Marquette, Murray St are in the mix. Interestingly enough, these small schools treat this as a major college sport and give scholarships for pro riders. Marion College kicks butt with their pro guys, considering they have a coach, team masseuse and cook and traveling mechanic.

Part of our booster club money goes to the Fiji riders as they race in this series. They travel to Ohio State this weekend and we help offset gas and travel expenses. The races are in 3 levels, A, B, and C. It gives great racing experience considering our boys have never raced a bike before trying out for the Little 500. Each weekend they race a Road Race and a Criterion (a small circuit track). Team tactics play out here similar to the Tour De France. It "may" mean that the Fiji's job today is to pull for the (choke) Cutters or Dodd's House rider, so he can be rested for the finish sprint. So they all ride for IU and help each other out depending on that days situation. Believe me when I say (as I watched last weekend at DePauw) it was hard to yell "go Sasha" (a Cutter) when he was in the lead. But we adapt I guess.

Below are a few pictures of the race last weekend for you to see how cool it is with all the different colleges represented. One picture is of Joe Keck leading the field up the hill which was appropriately called Finish Line Hill, and the other he leads them down a hill. Stayed tuned for more Fiji updates and thanks for your dollars, they help a lot!
